Dog Training FAQs

  • How much should I train my dog?

The frequency of dog training sessions depends on several factors, including the age, breed, and individual needs of your dog. However, in general, regular training sessions are recommended for optimal results. It's advisable to have short, daily training sessions to establish consistent communication and reinforce desired behaviors. Training should be approached with patience, positive reinforcement, and repetition, allowing your dog to gradually learn and retain new skills. Remember, each dog is unique, so it's essential to adjust the training schedule to suit your dog's abilities and progress.

  • Should I train my dog or get a Trainer?

Pet experts agree that every dog (and even experienced dog owners) can benefit from a Dog Trainer's expertise.

We highly recommend carrying out a bit of research on any potential Dog Trainer you are looking at using to ensure they have the necessary qualifications and education behind them.

  • How do I know which dog Trainer is best for me?

Finding the right dog Trainer for you and your dog involves a few important considerations. Start by researching trainers in your area, reading reviews, and asking for recommendations from trusted sources. Look for trainers who have experience, expertise and, most importantly, qualifications in the specific areas you want to address, such as obedience training or behavior modification. It's important to find a Trainer who uses positive reinforcement methods and emphasises a humane and compassionate approach. Schedule phone consultations with potential trainers to get a sense of their training philosophy, methods, and compatibility with your goals and values. Trust your instincts and choose a Trainer who communicates effectively, listens to your concerns, and demonstrates a genuine commitment to your dog's well-being.

  • What dog training methods are best?

Most pet experts agree that the best dog training methods focus on positive reinforcement and reward-based techniques. These methods emphasise rewarding desired behaviors rather than punishing undesirable ones. This approach helps build a strong bond between the dog and its owner while creating a positive learning experience. Forceful or harsh training methods, such as physical punishment, can be detrimental to a dog's well-being and may lead to fear or aggression.

  • What age is the best age to train a dog?

Dogs can benefit from obedience training as early as 7 weeks or when the puppy goes to their new home. By 6 months of age, almost all behaviour problems are already set in place. This means that early training can be used to avoid problems before they become more difficult and frustrating.  However, it's never too late to train a dog and older dogs can still learn and benefit from training at any age.

  • Does the dog Trainer train our dog for us?

We work on the basis of training the Owners, and your dog, so that you are able to go home with all the tools necessary to practice, and implement, your Training with your dog.  Our Trainer will demonstrate that your dog is capable of the training and then will advise you on to implement that Training yourself.  Remember, training is about consistency therefore, if we were to simply train your wee canine companion and give him back without you, as Owners, knowing how that training works they will default back to their naughty little monkey behaviours in no time.

  • How many training sessions will I need?

This will really depend on the number of behaviour issues you are facing and how well you pick the training up but, generally speaking, you should only need one 1 hour session with our Certified Trainer to cover all that you would cover in Puppy Class and far more!

  • Where do you carry out your training sessions?

We carry out our training sessions in Remuera on site.  We have a covered and uncovered space so it won't matter too much if it starts to rain a tad!

Of course, we understand, there are circumstances where your dog is not able to leave their own property or needs specific training on their own property.  In these situations, we are able to travel to you for an added travel fee.
